The Castle of Leiden

The Burcht of Leiden, also called the Leiden Castle, is an ancient monument that towers high above the city. Built around the year 1000 on an artificial hill, it originally served as a defensive structure and power center. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Old Rhine and New Rhine rivers made it an important fortress town.

The Castle has had an eventful history over the centuries. It has withstood sieges, policy changes and even a fire. In the 14th century, the Castle lost its military function, but it remained an important symbol of the city.
