🧀 The Leiden Cheese House – Hoge Woerd, Leiden

If you walk through the Hoge Woerd, you might glance past this facade... but anyone who looks up will see a piece of Leiden's history.

The name “Het Leidsche Kaashuis” recalls a time when this street was filled with artisan shops and trade. For centuries, Leiden was a true cheese city, where farmers from the region brought their cheeses and where the famous Leiden cumin cheese was traded.

These kinds of facades – with their characteristic tile panels and ornamental details – tell a story of craftsmanship, local pride, and daily activity. Not only was cheese sold here, but the rhythm of the city was also set.

Nowadays the building has a new purpose, but the name on the facade remains… as a silent reminder of Leiden in days gone by.
