City walk along the new Singelpark route. Recently, you can take a unique walk along all of Leiden's canals. Six new bridges have even been built for this purpose. 1. The Plantsoen, is a green city park on Leiden's canal where many people walk, exercise or relax in summer. Located on the city's old fortifications, the park has a special shape.

2. The Pieterskerk, is a large, historic church in the centre of Leiden. The building dates back to the Middle Ages and is currently used for events and gatherings.

3. The Rapenburg, is a well-known canal in Leiden with many historic buildings. On this canal is also the Academy Building of Leiden University, where important university ceremonies take place. There is also a lovely terrace here, Barrera.

Did you know that the Zuid-Hollandsche Bierbrouwerij in Leiden was once much more than just beer? 🍺

This used to be a depot and bottling plant, with a special “cold store” in the backyard. In winter, natural ice was stored here, straight from the Leiden canals and ditches.

In summer? Then that ice went to cafes around town - the way to keep drinks cool before the fridge existed.

But everything changed in the 1970s. Big breweries and soft drink manufacturers took over distribution... and so the characteristic round gate closed for good.

A piece of forgotten Leiden history, hidden behind those old walls.
